SOM1 Plenary Session Adopted Seven Priorities

The first Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM 1) of the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) ended on March 2, 2006 in Ha Noi.

First priority should be given to the implementation of the Busan Roadmap to reach the Bogor Goals, the goals proposed in APEC 2005, in Busan, the South Korea, which requires improving conditions for trade and investment and narrowing the gaps of economic and technical development standards among APEC member states.

Viet Nam, as the host nation of APEC 2006, will make every efforts to bring substance and efficiency to APEC, thus earning the trust of APEC members, said Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan.

Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Chairman of the Senior Officials’ Meeting, Le Cong Phung said that more than 1,500 representatives of 21 member states unanimously adopted the seven priority activities in APEC 2006 proposed by Viet Nam.

They include the improvement of cooperation among APEC members to facilitate trade and investment, the increase of competitiveness of small and medium sized enterprises; the promotion of globalization readiness through the development of human resources, information technology and communication co-operation, and partnership for development; the strengthening of human security; the promotion of anti-corruption and transparency; the cooperation of APEC economies through tourism and culture exchanges; the reform of APEC into an active and effective community.
