Viet Nam to Introduce Three Initiatives at APEC Meetings Geared Toward Public Safety

At the 2006 APEC meetings, host country Viet Nam is planning to present three initiatives for human safety, which will respond to natural disasters, pandemics, and food security, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat told the Sai Gon Giai Phong newspaper.

In an interview on Sunday, Cao Duc Phat said that the initiatives, which were jointly worked out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, will first be presented to the national assembly. If the terms and conditions are agreed upon, the initiatives will then be presented on the opening day of the APEC Economic Leaders' Week in Ha Noi.

Among the three suggestions included are the building of a cooperative system for APEC member-countries to cope with natural disaster risks, the implementation of a coordinated scheme for information sharing, and the establishment of an international warning system for such calamities as tsunamis, typhoons, or earthquakes.
