Assn. seeks to stock 200,000 tons of sugar

Vietnam's Sugar and Sugar Cane Association has asked for Government permission to stockpile 200,000 tons of sugar to prevent prices from shooting up after global prices have doubled to US$600 a ton since April.

According to the association, the sugar industry has begun processing this year’s sugarcane crop, with the country’s 44 modern mills and traditional plants expected to produce more than 1.1 million tons.

This year’s output is expected to be 200,000 tons higher than last year’s and meet domestic demand.
