Deer breeders earn hundreds of billion dong from selling velvet antlers

Breeders in the central province of Ha Tinh’s mountainous district Huong Son earned over VND120 billion, said the local Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on July 13.

Farmers are raising 33,450 deer producing 12.21 tons of velvet antlers in a single season, a year-on-year rise of 11 percent. It is expected that by late 2018, local people in Huong Son district will raise additional 2,050 deer.
Velvet is VND10-12 million a kilogram ($433.2) generating the income of over VND120 million; as a result, farmers will develop their herd of deer.
At present, farmers in communes Son Chau, Son Lam, Son Quang, Son Bang, Son Tay, Son Le, Son Truong are also breeding most the animals.
This year, in addition to selling velvet antler, farmers there earn income from selling breed deer.
Specifically, over one-year breed male deer is sold at the price of VND20-22 million while below one-year breed female deer fetches VND6-8 million per one and VND8-12 million a male breed deer.
After the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam under the Ministry of Science and Technology issued a certificate for deer brand name of Huong Son District on April 10, 2008, price of Huong Son deer velvet hiked with flock of traders to the district laying order to buy velvet antler.
Thanks to breeding the animal for velvet antler, thousands of households in the district improve their income.
