Consumer Price Index in March Slightly Slips

According to the General Statistics Office of Viet Nam, the consumer price index (CPI) in March, 2006 was down by 0.5% compared with that of the previous month.

The lowest decrease of 0.9% was in food and foodstuff group (0.2% in food and 1.1% in foodstuff).

Other groups witnessed a CPI decrease as follow:

         Culture, sport and entertainment; 0,7%

         Means of transport and communication : 0.6 %

         Beverage and cigarette: 0.5 %

         Other consumer goods and services: 0.4%

Among ten localities in the sampling survey, seven had goods prices reduction, including the Ho Chi Minh City (by 1.2%), Thua Thien-Hue and Binh Dinh provinces (1.3%), Ha Noi (1%).

However, the gold price index in March increased remarkably by 1.8%, while the US$ price index was down by 0.1%.
