Logistics far behind potential in Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta’s coast stretches over a total length of 700 kilometers but there has no seaport to exploit this advantage, reported experts at a seminar on logistics development strategy in the next five years in Can Tho city on Friday.

The region has 2,167 river ports and wharfs without any container port, according to reports at the event.

Logistics service development will optimize transportation of cargo from producers to consumers, lower costs and improve goods’ competitiveness, said delegates.

According to a plan, the Mekong Delta will have two logistics centers to meet socioeconomic development demand by 2020.

The seminar was hosted by Ministries of Transport, Industry and Trade, Planning and Investment, the Southwest Steering Board and the Vietnam Logistics Association.
