Ho Chi Minh City to Reward “Green Companies”

Later this year the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee will perform an extensive evaluation of industrial companies in the city and award “Green Company” certificates to those whose production meets environmental standards.

The evaluation is the brainchild of Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper and the HCMC Department of Resources and Environment. This is the first year the appraisal will be made in an effort to promote effective environmental protection measures throughout the city’s industrial sector.
At a preparation meeting on Saturday, Vice Chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee Nguyen Van Dua said that the municipal-level distinctions will be held annually every December.
Besides a trophy and a certificate of merit, the awarded Green Company certificates will act as a seal of approval in terms of clean production and environmental friendliness for export companies, especially in relation to the choosy markets Viet Nam will have access to after joining the World Trade Organization.
The HCMC People’s Committee will form an organizing board to direct the effort, while municipal authorities will conduct frequent and widespread campaigns for all production, business and service companies in the City and encourage participation in an effort towards clean production, preservation and the improvement of the city’s environment as a foundation for the country’s sustainable development.
Mr. Dua presided over the meeting  where the City’s Departments of Science - Technology, Industry and Finance, the Management Board of Export Processing Zones and Industrial Park and the HCMC Business Association were all present.
