The Mekong delta province of Kien Giang is leading the country in rice exports, achieving a turnover of US$445 million in 2011, confirmed Le Van Thi, chairperson of the Kien Giang People’s Committee.

Thi said that in 2011, enterprises in the province sold over 961,000 tons of various varieties of rice, achieving a turnover of US$445 million, up by 35.7 percent in value and 17.2 percent in volume as compared to the same period in 2010.
The province yielded over 3.9 million tons of rice, an increase of 420,000 tons compared to the same period last year; accordingly, it affirmed its place as a leader in rice exports in the country.
At present, Kien Giang Province is focusing on the winter-spring crop cultivation over 285,000 hectares. Province authorities are advising farmers to cultivate high quality rice for exports.
The Mekong delta province is also participating in the large-scale rice cultivation model over 480 hectares in 2011, and aims to add an additional 1,300 hectares by the next crop season.
