The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has announced that the Mekong Delta region plans to raise tra fish (pangasius) export earnings to US$1.85-2 billion by the end of 2012.

To achieve this target, the region will expand its total tra fish breeding area from 5,500 to 6,000 hectares, to yield an output of 1.2-1.5 million tonnes.

Mekong Delta authorities have also agreed to supply up to 2.6 billion small fish to breeders.

Last year, the region had a total output of 1.2 million tonnes of tra fish, and exported 600,000 tonnes to 135 markets across the globe, earning $1.8 billion.
