Nguyen Tan Khuong, chairman of the Dong Hai District People’s Committee, said 1,600 ha are submerged under water in his district, which has the largest salt-production area in the province.

Hoa Binh District and Bac Lieu town are the major producers.

As a result, salt prices have doubled in Bac Lieu since 2008 to VND2,500 per kilogram. The unseasonable rain has caused losses of billions of dong to salt makers.
