By defeating 2,672 competitors, nine contestants will enter the first final round from May 3 to May 31.

They will be divided into three groups. Group A will be for people above 66-years-of-age. Group B will be for people from 51 to 65-years-of-age, and Group C will include people from 35 to 50-years-of-age.

According to the organizers, the quality of contestants this year is much better than in previous years as some of the contestants are members of various Music Associations in their locality, and can therefore compose music and even play a variety of musical instruments.

Songwriter Phan Hong Son, head of the organizing board, said the singing contest satisfies the desires of middle-aged, elderly and veteran music lovers.

The third season opened for nationwide entries, so that more contestants could register for the show. Some changes have been made in the evaluation process so that contestants face less pressure this time.

Each contestant brings to the singing competition a moving story, which makes the contest more appealing. Mai Van Dang, 71, from the southern province of Binh Duong has failed to register for the contest on three attempts.

In the second season, he was diagnosed with cancer of the third stage, which did not allow him to continue. However, in the third season, he said he succeeded in fighting back the disease and he now feels strong enough to participate.

Many contestants failed to make it in the competition, like Dang, but all are happy with just participating and will continue to register for other seasons.
