Among the attendants of the ceremony were Dr. Phung Huu Phu, member of the Party Central Committee, standing deputy head of the Party Central Committee’s Propaganda and Education Commission, and chairman of the Central Artistic and Literary Theory and Criticism Council; and Nguyen Van Dua, standing deputy secretary of the HCM City Party Committee.

The Ho Chi Minh City Artistic and Literary Theory and Criticism Council will carry out four key tasks: reviewing and assessing art and literary composition, theory and criticism; initiating suggestions for art and literary theory and criticism; introducing art and literary works of high value and criticizing works with ideological errors; and recommending outstanding works for awards.

Commenting on the council’s role, Mr. Dua said: “The council will be a reliable mainstay for creative efforts of artists and writers. It will help promote positive elements and drive back negative trends in the field of art and literature, so as to build up an artistic and literary environment that is healthy and modern and can contribute to the country’s international integration.”

“The council is the first of its kind at the local level. In my opinion, the council will not only focus on the artistic and literary development in HCM City, but it may also have certain influence on art and literary activities in the South as a whole,” Mr. Phu said.

To fulfill its missions, the council should seek cooperation from social scientists, theorists, artists, and commentators in the South, as well as nationwide, he advised.
