Fatal accident brings local festival to halt

The People’s Committee of Hai Phong city has launched a decision to temporarily halt Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival for investigation of the use of stimulant therapy in buffalos after the accident on July 1.

On the day, the buffalo No. 18 killed his master by goring in the festival. The buffalo’s owner is Dinh Xuan Huong, 47, a resident of Do Son’s Van Huong Ward.

The municipal People’s Committee has asked the Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism to check the management and organization tasks of the festival. The People’s Committee of Do Son District is required for responsibility on safety and must carry out recovery procedures to report to the municipal People’s Committee and the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism before July 4.

Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival  is a unique and traditional festival in Do Son District, Hai Phong city. This festival is officially held on the 9th of the 8th lunar month for prosperity and happiness to local people from the 18th century.

Festivals depicting evil activities of brutality and violence will be banned. This was announced in Circular No. 15 issued by the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism in December, 2015.

The rituals and festivals reflecting the superstition, cruel fighting, sights of horror, the satisfaction of evildoers will not be allowed to organize in the country. The events aim only to promote and preserve good traditional cultural values, their unsuitable customs will be eliminated.
