French opera revived in HCM City
Frédégonde was written by Camille Saint–Saens when he visited Con Dao Island, an archipelago off the coast of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province and 234 km from Ho Chi Minh City, in 1895.
The opera is about Frédégonde, a servant-turned queen in the pre-Medieval period, leading to severe power conflicts. The play has been influenced by Asian culture in the island, including the use of traditional instruments such as gongs and wooden clarinets. The opera made its first performance in Paris a century ago and not performed for over a century.
The show is performed by local an foreign artists of France, South Korea and the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera with the support of the Consulate General of France in Ho Chi Minh City, French Institute in HCM City and La Fabrique Opera.
