The Department of Culture and Society of the People’s Council of Ho Chi Minh City has asked the Department of Culture and Information and the theater’s managing company, Arts Organizing and Performing Company of Ho Chi Minh City, to finish formalities early for restoration to begin in October.

A new state-of-the-art lighting system at the front of the theater will be funded by the French city of Lyon, who has generously donated EUR160, 000 for the cause.

The HCMC municipal theater was built at the turn of the 20th Century, and is centrally located on District 1’s Dong Khoi Street near two of the cities largest hotels, the Caravelle and the Continental.

The theater, with three stories and 1800 seats, is an ancient work of French architecture that has been renovated several times over the past century. It is the place for performances such as plays, concerts, ballets and operas as well as being home to many important national events such as conferences and meetings.
