Street Festival for Backpackers

As of December 31, a section of De Tham street limited by the two streets of Pham Ngu Lao and Tran Hung Dao will be blocked to public traffic for the street festival “Welcome the new year 2007” for foreign backpackers.

The festival held by officials from District 1’s Cultural center and Pham Ngu Lao Ward includes street games of walking on stilts, dancing with bamboo poles, making things with coconut’s leaves, playing human chess, and the such performances by the city’s circus as fire dance, acrobatics, one-wheeled bicycle ride.

There is a make-up booth of the Thanh Nien Cultural House’s Art Club to provide visitors with free make-up. Also visitors can have their photos taken for the event by the photographers of District 1’s Photography Club.

Mr. Mai Vy, deputy director of the cultural center, said that folk culinary stalls, souvenir and calligraphy stands will be put up along the De Tham’s pavements.

On the main stage, diverse traditional songs and dances will be continuously performed together with the performances of jazz, flamenco, world music from 8:00 pm until midnight, when the program will turn to hip-hop jubilantly exciting dances for visitors to take part in.
