UNESCO recognises Vietnam’s Buddhist Sutra woodblocks

Woodblocks of the Buddhist Sutras’ at the Vinh Nghiem Pagoda in Bac Giang Province were recognised as documentary heritage at the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Regional Conference in Bangkok on Wednesday.

The announcement was made by Hoang Thi Hoa, former director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Bac Giang Province.

The woodblocks of the Buddhist Sutras’ in Vinh Nghiem Pagoda in Yen Dung District in Bac Giang Province are said to be of great educational and ancient literature value by researchers.

Contents on the woodblocks can reveal ancient Vietnamese Buddhist history, early science and technology, literature and the arts, philosophy, sociology and linguistics of earlier civilizations.
