Veteran cai luong artist Ut Bach Lan passes away

Meritorious Artist Ut Bach Lan, one of the southern region's leading cai luong artists, passed away at her home from illness in Ho Chi Minh City on November 4.

The veteran traditional performer whose real name is Dang Thi Hai was born in 1935 in the Mekong Delta province of Long An and spent more than 60 years performing and singing cai luong.

She appeared in hundreds of cai luong plays, such as Hoa Moc Lan (Mullan), Nua doi huong phan ((A prostitute's life), Son Nu Pha Ca (Pha Ca – Mountain Girl) and more.Ut Bach Lan and ca luong actor Thanh Duoc was considered as the golden couple of the Cai Luong stage in 1960s.

She is one of the founders of the charity club Hoa lan trang (white orchid) with the participation of cai luong artists, including Thanh Su, Bao Tran, Dieu Hien and among.

She trained and gave instructions to many generations of cai luong artists, likely Phuong Hong Thuy, My Thu, Ngan Vuong and more.

Her funeral is held at the An Quang Pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 10 then she will be buried at Binh Hung Hoa Cemetery in Binh Tan District on November 8.
