Bridging the gap between training and employment is a pivotal factor for city development, said Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong at a seminar on employment solution for graduates held in University of Economics yesterday.

The People’s Committee Chairman cum Higher Education Principal Council Chairman said creating solutions to deal with unemployment is one of the criteria in the country’s annual socioeconomic growth.
Coming up with employment solution especially for university and college graduates is still a challenge. In reality, Vietnam has not had complete information of labor market and its transformation, and relentless operation of the market economy resulting in personnel changes, he said.
Moreover, higher education facilities should bridge the gap between graduate skills and firms’ demand, he added.
Chairman Phong quoted an international article reporting that Vietnamese graduates working in informal economy with wage of VND5 million a month. This has shown a worry that their ambition and desires enter a blind alley after years of schooling pursuit. Therefore, creating jobs for students is the Government’s responsibility and schools.
Averagely, the Government creates over 300,000 employments including 135,000 new jobs diminishing unemployment rate in urban to below 3.8 percent annually.
Achievements in graduate employment solution and training quality improvement in higher education institutions have seen. Specifically, ten universities have been recognized internationally, twenty-one other facilities meet education requirements and over 700 Asian students are pursuing education in Vietnam.
The rate of graduates having jobs in HCMC reaches 72.3 percent. Additionally, the city has set up university principal council with 46 principals and 400,000 students as well as built enterprises community with 372,000 participants.
Mr. Phong said that this is an important contributing factor in developing resource for higher education as well as promoting close cooperation between schools and firms in training and employment solution, aiming to contribute to the labor market completion and employment opportunities for graduates.
Mr. Phong affirmed the city always focuses on creating employment for graduates. HCMC pledged to create good condition for the labor market completion as well as connection between schools and enterprises with the aim to reduce the gap between training and real demand.
