Viet Nam to host International Mathematics Olympiad in 2007

Viet Nam will host the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) for the first time in 2007, announced the Ministry of Education and Training.

Vietnamese students won 3 silver and 3 bronze medals in the IMO 2005 held in Mexico
The competition is scheduled for July, 2007 with the participation of nearly 100 teams from many nations and regions all over the world. Viet Nam will honorably be the 29th host country of the well-known competition.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Tran Van Nhung said that an organizing board including 12 sub-committees had been set up to prepare for the international competition.

Many experts from the Vietnameses Institute of  Mathematics and experienced lecturers from Viet Nam National University – Ha Noi and Ha Noi Teachers University will directly be involved in the preparation and operation of the IMO. Around 60 leading Vietnamese mathematicians will join the board of examiners.

Viet Nam entered the IMO in 1974 and won the first and the runner-up prizes. Viet Nam has attended over 30 consecutive IMOs and repeatedly ranked among the ten top teams.

In 2004, Vietnamese team of six competitors received four gold, two silver medals and ranked fourth among 90 teams from other nations. Viet Nam has, so far, gained 35 gold, 73 silver and 51 bronze medals.

The IMO is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with seven countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 80 countries from five continents.
