The 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities has been lately released by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published in June 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities (CWCU), Graduate School of Education (formerly the Institute of Higher Education) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, and updated on an annual basis.
ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university and SCIE & SSCI papers. More than 1800 universities are actually ranked by ARWU every year and the best 1000 are published.
For 16 years, no higher education facilities of Vietnam has been ranked by ARWU. This year, Ton Duc THang University was ranked thanks to its efforts and development strategic plan for 30 years. The university managers have been determined to turn the university into one of top 500 facilities in the globe.
By a statistic of the Web of Science, from August 1, 2018 to July, 31, 2019, the university has led the country in published researches. Some 1,407 researches have been published in world leading magazines.
Harvard University tops the ranking list for the 17th year. Stanford University and University of Cambridge remain to be the No. 2 and No. 3 respectively. Other Top 10 universities are MIT, Berkeley, Princeton, Oxford, Columbia, Caltech and Chicago. In Continental Europe, ETH Zurich (19th) continues to be the best ranked university, and University of Copenhagen (26th) takes the second place. The University of Tokyo (25th) and Kyoto University (32nd) keep their leading positions in Asia. Tsinghua University (43rd) is ranked the third among Asian universities. The University of Melbourne (41st) tops other universities in Oceania.
The presence of a university of Vietnam in ARWU is a pride marking the country’s significant turning point in education development.
