A 9-year-old boy succumbed to the mysterious skin disease that has been plaguing residents in the central province of Quang Ngai, after undergoing treatment for seven days in Children Hospital No.1 in Ho Chi Minh City, bringing the death toll to 22, said a gov’t official on May 25.

Pham Van But, chairman of Ba Dien Commune in Ba To District in the central province of Quang Ngai, announced that Pham Van Thach, 9, son of Pham Van Thoat from Reu Village had died after seven days of treatment in Children Hospital No.1 in HCMC.

Thach’s death is the third in Reu village from the unknown skin disease in just one month, bringing the total death toll from the disease to 22 victims.

The Department of Health in Quang Ngai Province has announced that 47 others are currently being treated in hospitals in the province, three of whom are in serious condition.

The General Hospital in the province has been using the blood filtering machine for treatment of the unidentified skin disease. The machine helps to eliminate toxic substances from the blood, and revive patients suffering from liver and other organ function disorders.

At present, 26 patients are being treated for the bizarre skin disease in the hospital. With the blood filtering machine, it is hoped that the number of patients being transferred to the central hospitals in big cities will greatly reduce.

Medical workers continue to prescribe a healthy and more nutritious diet, as they believe that people being affected by this strange skin disease suffer from acute malnutrition.
