Another baby dies after Quinvaxem vaccination

Health experts confirmed the deaths of two babies after five-in-one Quinvaxem vaccine in past week were caused by anaphylactic shock.

The two babies in the northern province of Hai Duong and the central province of Nghe An died after being vaccinated with the 5-in-1 vaccine Quinvaxem -the South Korean made vaccine meant to prevent five common, potentially fatal childhood diseases: diphtheria (D), tetanus (T), pertussis (P, whooping cough), hepatitis B (HepB), and Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib).

Bui Huy Nhanh, director of Hai Duong Province's Ceter for Preventive Medicine said that 18 month old baby Nguyen Ngoc Tuong Vy in Ngoc Ky Commune in Hai Duong Province's Tu Ky District was taken to the commune's medical clinic for second shot of Quinvaxem and drank vaccine against poliomyelitic on October 25. After checking the infant's health condition, medical workers decided to inject her and she had no reaction after being vaccinated so she went home.

However, next day, the infant suffered fever and vomiting, breathing problem and her legs and bottom's skin has purple. As her health was worse, she was taken to emergency room in Children Hospital when she suffered high fever, serious breathing problem.

Through diagnosis, doctors said that she suffered organ failure and serious septic shock ; accordingly, they provided intensive care to her yet doctor's efforts to save the baby was unrewarded she died next day on October 27.  The Department of Health confirmed her death is due to anaphylactic shock.

A representative from the province's Preventive Medicine Center said that the expiry date of the vaccine injected to the baby is July, 2017. The vaccine has been injected to many babies in the province yet only the death of baby Vy was reported.

Before, 3 month old baby Lo Tuan Truong in Que Phong District of Nghe An Province died 5 minutes after vaccinated with Quinvaxem  vaccine on October 20 at the commune medical clinic.
