First Bone Marrow Transplant at Central Paediatrics Hospital

The marrow for Dang Gia Hung, 7, came from his 13-year-old sister Thu Thao, who began donating 350 ml of the jelly-like substance at 8.30 AM on Thursday.

It was then sterilized and given to Gia Hung over four hours starting at noon. By five o’clock, brother and sister had recovered and were doing well.

The hospital’s director, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Liem, says they’ll know if the new marrow has taken when it begins producing red cells.

Gia Hung must take medication for nine months to prevent his body rejecting the gift from his older sister.

Specialists from Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia have been assisting the Ha Noi hospital throughout.
