HFM cases spiraling in Mekong delta

By the Ministry of Health’s statistics, the country has over 44,000 hand-foot-mouth cases in 62 cities and provinces.

Of 44,000 hand-foot-mouth patients, five in the South Vietnam succumbed to the disease. In the Mekong delta, the number of hand-foot-mouth cases is spiraling in Dong Thap, An Giang and Hau Giang provinces.

By November, Dong Thap province has over 3,000 infection cases including one death. The province General Hospital’s latest data shows that it has admitted and treated 420 patient or everyday 14 kids were hospitalized in October alone, three times higher than before. Of these, 60 suffered the disease in the second stage (the fourth stage is the most severe).

In Hau Giang province, the medical clinic in Phung Hiep District said that in order to curb the spreading of the disease, the health authority ordered to temporarily close the door of Tan Binh Preschool in Tan Binh Commune to spray chemical.

Health sector detected the occurrence of fatal virus strain Enterovirus 71 which caused complications in brain and heart leading deaths. Yet just a few of cases contracting fatal virus strain Enterovirus 71 have been recorded.

In addition to an increase in drugs and medical equipment, hospitals implemented measure to prevent transmission of hospital-acquired infections.

In the Mekong delta, around 80 percent kids contracting hand-foot-mouth aged from 1 to 3 are not sent to preschools. Accordingly, virus may reside in their toys. Therefore, medical workers said parents should use standard good hygiene precautions such as hand-washing with soap and water as well as clean toys to help limit the spread of the virus.

Strains of EV71 that usually circulate here cause milder symptoms such as rashes, fever and blisters on the hands, feet and mouth.
