Local authorities to be responsible for dengue infection increase

Deputy Chairwoman of People’s Committee in Ho Chi Minh City Nguyen Thi Thu said at a meeting yesterday that district authorities will be held accountable to the city People's Committee if dengue spread widely in their localities.

The urgent meeting was convened to discus dengue prevention in the city with the participation of the city Department of Health and people’s committees in 24 districts.

Speaking at the meeting , director of the city Department of Preventive Medicine Nguyen Tri Dung said that since the beginning of the year, 12,217 dengue infections have been recorded ca, up 27 percent compared to the same period last year.
District 12 has seen a rise of 133 percent while outlying district of Can Gio has an increase of the disease by 125 percent, Hoc Mon and Binh Tan districts surged by 83 percent and 64 percent respectively. Four dengue-related deaths was reported in the city.
Ms. Thu asked leaders of related agencies to work with units of Women Union, Veteran Association and Communist Youth Union to publish information of the disease to residents as well as encourage them to tidy the residential blocks and clear away water containers where mosquito usually lay their eggs into.
Dengue outbreak highlights poor waste management; accordingly, local administrators have launched many cleanup campaign calling for people’s participation.
Ms. Thu said that at present, the city still has landfills which are ideal places for mosquito lay eggs.
