Ministry of Health continues tests of new polio vaccine

The Department of Preventive Medicine under the Ministry of Health yesterday said that after a clinical trial of an experimental polio vaccine on 60 healthy adults to assess its safety, the Center for Research and Production of vaccine and Biologicals started to inject it on kids in 10 communes in the northern province of Phu Tho’s Thanh Son District.

These kids are health and not injected with polio vaccine before. The experiment on kids must be approved by their parents. They will be given three shots of vaccine over one month apart.

Each kid will be taken blood three times before the first shoot, before and after the third shoot to assess his safety during pre-immunization and post-immunization of vaccination. All children will be under close observation in 7 first days to report their body reaction.

As per a representative of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Thanh Son District was selected to experiment the vaccine because the district has carried out many experiment of several vaccines such as Japanese encephalitic and Rotavirus. Accordingly, medical workers are experienced in encouraging residents to partake in the vaccine experiment.

As per the plan for the second phase of vaccine experiment of polio vaccine, it will last to July, 2016. If successful, the third phase will be conducted on nearly 1,000 kids.

Afterwards, the vaccine will be sold in the market in 2018. The vaccine is one of vaccines which the government and the Ministry of Health decided to include into the national products.
