Number of cancer cases in Vietnam to hit 200,000 in 2020

The number of cancer cases Vietnam will reach nearly 200,000 by 2020, said Associate Professor, Dr Tran Van Thuan, Director of Hanoi-based K Hospital, on the occasion of the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day.

Since 2000, the number of new cancer cases in Vietnam had grown from 68,000 to 126,000 in 2010. Most of Vietnamese cancer patients are diagnosed in late stage of the disease. Around 94,000 Vietnamese people have died from cancer each year.
There are about 23 million people living with cancer in the world . The number of cancer cases and deaths are respectively 14.1 and 8.2 million people annually.
World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is the global day of action for hospice and palliative care. It is taking place this year on 14 October 2017 to raise awareness of palliative care as a crucial, defining part of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

This year’s event themed “Universal Health Coverage and Palliative Care: Don’t leave those suffering behind!” aims to improve the quality of life of patients with cancer and reduce the financial burden driven by serious chronic and life-limiting illness.
