Nevertheless, 20 cities and provinces including Hanoi, the northern provinces of Yen Bai, Phu Tho, the southern provinces of Tay Ninh, Tien Giang, Kien Giang, and Ho Chi Minh City have seen an increase in people infected with HIV virus.
The number of fresh infection cases in Hanoi and HCMC accounts for 25 percent of the country’s whole patients; Hanoi and HCMC reported 311 and 572 new cases respectively.
A leader of the Administrations of HIV/AIDS Control said that in Tay Ninh province, Tien Giang province, Kien Giang province and Phu Tho province have reported the escalation of fresh HIV infection despite implementation of testing activities. This showed HIV virus is living in the community.
Accordingly, if the government has not invested more in increasing information and testing activities to curb the development, people will think that the disease is controlled.
Through investigation, sexual contact is the most common route of HIV transmission. Among new cases, 48 percent were contracted HIV through sexual activities while 33 percent were contracted the disease through direct blood contact, particularly through sharing injection drug needles or blood transfusions, accidents in health care settings or certain blood products and 3 percent were mother-to-baby transmission.
