The scientific council arrived in the conclusion that septic shock and septic infection may be due to hospital-acquired infection.

Before, Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien and leaders of agencies liaised with the hospital on the incident. Director of Maternal and Child Health Department Nguyen Duc Vinh said that it is an anomaly because one after another were announced dead within seven hours while receiving neonatal treatment at the hospital. Because, the average mortality rate of newborns in Vietnam is 400-500 a year.

The health minister asked the hospital to review its infection control procedures which might lead to septic shock and infection for the babies. She blamed patient overload for hospital-acquired infection.

Director of the hospital Dr. Le Van Nam attributed the dead newborns were also “low birth weight” ones. Right after the incident, 12 other babies in critical condition were soon transferred to the National Children Hospital and the Pediatric Department of Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi.
