Thousands of clinics nationwide have no proper waste treatment system, said the Department of Medical Environment Management under the Ministry of Health.
As per the Department, of more than 13,000 infirmaries nationwide, nearly 5,200 have no standard medical waste treatment. Most of them are medical clinics in provinces and districts with tens of thousand of untreated water discharging into the environment causing serious pollution.
Head of the Department Nguyen Thi Lien Huong said that due to limited state budget for waste treatment system, many clinics have not installed standard waste treatment system. Many locality authorities underplayed the issue; therefore, hospitals received little amount for solving the issue. Besides, some hospitals lack personnel in maintaining and repairing the system.
With the target of most of infirmaries having standard waste treatment system in 2020, the Ministry of Health asked for the government’s permission to have a specific policy on the matter. The Ministry also called for social contribution in treating medical to resolve the financial difficulties.
