Two first surrogate pregnancy cases succeed

Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai from Tu Du Obstetrics Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday said that the hospital successfully implanted embryos for two surrogate mothers.

One surrogate mother has one and the other has twins.

The 33 year old woman acts as a surrogate mother for her cousin, 28, in the central province of Khanh Hoa, who has defects in reproductive organs. The 7-week old fetus develops well having heartbeat.

The second case is a woman in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau who also suffers defects in reproductive organs. She has got married for 7 years and had the implantation carried out by doctors at the city's Tu Du Obstetrics Hospital yet it failed.

The surrogate mother is her 27 year old cousin. The fetus is 5 weeks.

After Vietnam allowed surrogate pregnancy, Tu Du Hospital has received documents of 18 cases who meet requirements legally for surrogate pregnancy. A surrogacy is a case in which the embryo of a biological child of a woman and her spouse is implanted into the uterus of the recipient after it is created through the in-vitro fertility technique. The rate of success is 45 percent.
