Viet Nam Tightens Medical Checks for Travelers

The Bureau of Preventive Medicine and Environment has directed quarantine centers at border crossings nationwide to intensify the medical inspection of travelers who are suffering from flu or fever, particularly those from bird flu affected areas.

Bird flu has affected 14 countries for a total of 368 human infections. Of these, 234 have resulted in death.

Viet Nam has so far recorded 105 cases, including 51 deaths. This year, four patients died of Type A-H5N1 virus in the provinces of Tuyen Quang, Hai Duong, Ninh Binh and Phu Tho.

In related news, the Vietnamese Department of Animal Health has put the two provinces of Lao Cai and Quang Binh on the list of bird flu infected localities.

Four samples taken from 300 dead ducks on a farm in Quang Nam Province were found to be H5N1 positive. Some 4,800 ducks on six farms in the same province were culled. However, the provincial authorities have yet to confirm this report.
