Viet Nam to Produce Tamiflu from Star Aniseed

The Vietnamese Institute of Science and Technology

After succeeding in extracting acid shikimic from star aniseed, Dr. Nguyen Quyet Chien said he and his colleagues from the Institute of Chemistry, a division of the Vietnamese Institute of Science and Technology has synthesized the first 2.5 gram oseltamivir phosphate from shikimic acid.

Oseltamivir phosphate is the active element making up Tamiflu, an antiviral drug against avian flu. To produce oseltamivir phosphate, scientists have carried out 20 different chemical reactions.

It is expected that Viet Nam can produce Tamiflu from shikimic acid next year, thus the country being in full control of Tamiflu supply.
