Vietnam to discontinue import of ‘Serratiopeptidase’ enzyme

After Japan and South Korea have discontinued use of ‘Serratiopeptidase’, an enzyme having anti-inflammatory, anti-oedemic and fibrinolytic properties, Vietnam too wants to stop imports of raw material to make the protease, a health official said on May 13.

Truong Quoc Cuong, head of Vietnam Drug Administration, said that Japan and South Korea have discontinued use of the Serratiopeptidase enzyme that was earlier widely used for treatment of acute pain, because it has been found to be ineffective for pain relief.

Hence, Vietnam will follow suit and stop import of raw material, semi-finished products or medicines containing this enzyme.

In addition, health watchdogs will immediately stop new registration for the enzyme.
