For the first time in Vietnam, doctors succeeded in preventing Thalassemia thanks to vitro fertilization.
A β-thalassemia carrier couple comprising a 38-year-old female and a 36-year-old male partner hailing from the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai came to the hospital in 2016 for vitro fertilization
After carrying out tests, doctors discovered the couple are β-thalassemia carriers; accordingly, doctors selected the healthy fetus amongst seven ones.
The wife gave birth to a healthy child not β-thalassemia carrier on Sep. 15. The baby weighed 3.2 kg.
in Vietnam, around 10 million people are β-thalassemia carriers including 2,000 kids.
