On the occasion of Doctors’ Day, the Ho Chi Minh City Association for Poor Patients February 27 organized a closing ceremony for a program that saved the lives of 1,000 children from poor backgrounds who had congenital heart diseases.

The ceremony was attended by State President Nguyen Minh Triet and the city’s Party committee secretary, Le Thanh Hai.

352 individuals and organizations domestically and abroad funded the program with VND44.2 billion ($2.6 million).

In 2009, doctors and physicians from the same hospitals will continue to coordinate with the Association to save another 1,000 children with congenital heart disease in 33 provinces and cities.

At the ceremony, President Triet expressed his gratefulness to kind-hearted benefactors, doctors and physicians and the Association for helping sick children. He desired the program to be further developed.

At present, there are over 2,000 children with congenital heart disease from the age of 7 to 21. Most are from poor families.
