Austria opens consulate in HCM City

The Austrian Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City started operation on May 5 at No. 8, Nguyen Hue Street, District 1.

Mr. Johannes Peterlik, the Austrian Ambassador to Vietnam, hosted a reception at the Park Hyatt Hotel to introduce the honorary consul, Mr. Dao Ha Trung, who is also chief representative of the Waz Media Group in Vietnam.

The ambassador said the consulate would facilitate Austrian citizens in HCM City, help strengthen trade ties, and promote cooperation in investment, culture and education between the two countries.

Honorary consul Trung said that the most important role of the consulate would be to popularize Vietnam’s images in Europe, especially in German-speaking countries.

Austria and Vietnam established their diplomatic ties in 1972. Vietnam currently houses only ten Austrian-invested projects.

Mr. Trung said the University of Vienna is working with the National University Ho Chi Minh City to cooperate in training medical doctors, and the former wants to build a hospital in the city.

The two countries’ bilateral trade increased from almost 100 million euros in 2007 to 360 million euros last year in 2008.
