Downpour Causes Serious Flooding in HCMC

A heavy rain lasting more than 3 hours yesterday afternoon caused serious flooding and jams in many areas in HCM City.

The downpour made a lot of cars, taxis and motorbikes break down, causing prolonged traffic jams in a lot of areas in districts 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 11, Tan Phu, Binh Thanh and Go Vap.

Streets such as Hung Vuong, Nguyen Huu Canh, Ba Dinh, Minh Phung, 3 Thang 2, Hau Giang, etc., were flooded under 0.5 meters, blocking traffic and flooding many houses.

At the De Tham apartment block, sewage water overflowed into the underground water reservoir, seriously contaminating the water source.

As the flooding occurred during the rush hour, many employees had to leave their motorbikes at their offices and returned home by bus, causing an overload to some of the city’s bus routes.

During yesterday’s heavy rain, the city had as many as 54 areas, including those in district 1,  that were flooded under  0.1 – 0.6 meters of water, reported the HCM City’s Center for Flooding Prevention.

According to the Southern Hydrometeorology Station, HCMC will continue to be flooded this weekend because heavy rains will occur along with high tides.
