Environmental Leader Takes Part in Online Chat

Two leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Natural Resources and Environment on Thursday chatted online with Sai Gon Giai Phong readers about environmental issues affecting the city.

Many readers expressed concern regarding hundreds of billions of VND that must be spent by the city each year to deal with the environmental consequences caused by a lack people working in the environmental department of the municipal government.

Many proposed that the city could save a great deal of money if participation by the private sector in the area of environmental protection was permitted.

An inhabitant suggested the department should regulate exhaust emissions from motorbikes in the city, an opinion heartily shared by Mr Tran The Ngoc, Director of HCMC Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

In response to a question from another student asking why the lead content in motorbike fumes has increased (according to tests carried out by the city’s Environmental Protection Bureau) after the government had prohibited leaded gasoline on the market, Mr Tran The Ngoc said that the department will ask the bureau to look into the matter.
