Fake driving license warning

The number of counterfeit driving licenses has risen rapidly, especially in the last six months of 2008, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport said.

Most suspected counterfeit cases prove licenses to be invalid. The licenses have been faked or are tampered with and have drivers’ names and type of license altered, it said.

In 2007, the Department was ordered to verify 241 cases: 110 were fakes, 44 had been illegally tampered and 64 motorbike licenses ‘magically’ becoming automobile licenses.

The number of fraudulent licenses doubled in 2008 with 544 cases: 267 fakes, 146 had names altered and 131 having type of license changed.

Last year, the Department found at least 20 people who have consecutively registered for motor driving license tests. They believe these people are selling licenses to counterfeit gangs.

The authorities could not refuse their applications as there are no regulations limiting how many times a person could apply for a test.

Most faked license users said they were afraid that they were not able to pass the tests.

Some blamed having to wait too long for their turn to learn how to drive and take tests but needed their licenses quickly to make a living.

Some people were deceived into paying for fake licenses.

There are three places that receive applications to alter and issuing driving license:

- 252 Ly Chinh Thang St., Ward 9, District 3
- 08 Nguyen Anh Thu St., Trung My Tay Ward, District 12
- 111 Tan Son Nhi St., Tan Son Nhi Ward, Tan Phu District.
