Green cover area reduces 50 percent in HCMC

The area of parks, trees, flower gardens and road dividers in HCMC has reduced from 1,000 hectares in 1998 to about 535 hectares now, reported Dr. Luu Duc Cuong, head of Vietnam Institute for Urban and Rural Planning under the Ministry of Construction.

The fall has been because many projects in residential areas have not abided by the plan on green cover development, lot of areas meant for tree planting have been used for other purposes.
Urbanization progress for the last 15 years has resulted in the disappearance of 47 canals with the total area of 16.4 hectares. In addition, 7.4 hectares of Binh Tien reservoir,  one of the most important ones in the region, has been filled up.
