HCMC continues to send homeless drug addicts to social rehabilitation centers

Head of the Ho Chi Minh City-based Department of social evil prevention Tran Ngoc Du said at a meeting that homeless addicts would be taken into social rehabilitation center.

Taking homeless drug addicts into social centers is one of the National Assembly’s decisions.

Since the beginning of the year, Tran Ngoc Du said that the municipal Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs has planned to taking these special people into social rehabilitation centers before the upcoming Lunar New Year.

As planned, People’s Committees in districts must list the name of homeless drug addicts in districts to send to the Department and district authorities must have plan to take care of these people in centers on the occasion of Tet holiday (Lunar New Year).

For drug addicts who are city residents with permanent address, Tran Ngoc Du said that the city will encourage them to rehabilitate at homes; yet local medical workers in healthcare facilities are unable to follow all of them. Therefore, the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs asked district people’s committees and social centers to list the name of drug addicts who voluntarily rehabilitate at homes.

By statistics, the city has over 20,000 drug addicts and 60 percent of them are homeless. Last year, the city sent over 5,500 homeless drug addicts to social rehabilitation centers, meantime the number of drug addicts with permanent addresses rehabilitated in their families were around 1,000.
