HCMC holds meeting to mark International Women’s Day

The Women’s Union in HCMC held a meeting to celebrate the 1,974 anniversary of Trung Sisters’ Uprising and the 104th International Women’s Day on March 6 in Ho Chi Minh City.

At the meeting, Chairwoman of the Municipal Women’s Union Dinh Thi Bach Mai highlighted the tradition of Vietnamese women and their contributions to social development. 

The ceremony is to praise solidarity and for the gender equality and women’s progress, said Bach Mai. Values of Vietnamese women are the core of every present innovation. Last year, 19,451 female employees in state-run companies were granted the “Gioi Viec Nuoc, Dam Viec Nha” award for most patriotic women.

The women union’s branches gifted VND184 billion (US$8.7 million) to charity. They encouraged over 800,000 households to participate in the electricity saving campaign resulting in over 500 million kWh equal to VND893 billion (US$42.4 million) saved.

The union also encouraged 7,400 landlords to not increase rent charges of students and workers and set up daycare units for employees with young children.

On behalf of city leaders, Nguyen Van Dua commended women unions’ achievements across the country. He believes the union should pay more attention to the project to train five million mothers who are good at taking care of her children. Dua also suggests establishing good daycare centers in Binh Tan and Thu Duc Districts where many immigrant female workers reside.

Participating in the event was Truong My Hoa, former State Vice President; Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Vice Secretary of the HCMC Party's Committee; Nguyen Van Dua, Vice Standing Secretary of HCMC Party Committee; Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam, Chairwoman of the municipal People's Council and Vietnamese heroic mothers, heroes of the people's armed forces, labor heroes, and many women in the city.
