HCMC issues stiff penalties on environmental violators

Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee asked the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to work with local administrations to enhance supervision on environment violations issuing stiff penalties on violators.

As per the request of the municipal People’s Committee on October 8, the Department will work with people’s committees in districts 8, Binh Tan and Binh Chanh to update direct wastewater discharges into Cho Dem River and Xang Ngang canal.
Localities will liaise with the Department to enhance close supervision on environmental violations and issue fines in an effort to end the pollution in the two above-mentioned places.
According to reports of districts, the Department will write plan for scheduled visits to these firms which discharge wastewater into the river and the canal. Inspectors will handle violations and impose strict fines on violators.
Managers of industrial and export processing zones in the city will increase supervision on operation and maintenance of wastewater collect system and wastewater treatment system in the zones.
They will ask investors of these zones to build a plan to cope with environment incident following the requirement of the Ministry.
The plan will include preventative measures against incident during operational procedures of the wastewater collection and treatment system.
The Department of Transport and the Anti-Flood operation center are implementing dredging and maintenance projects of these systems in Dem River and Xang Ngang canal.
Next time, in addition to available preventative measures, competent agencies will continuously update data of direct wastewater discharge into the river and the canal.
Authorities in districts 8 , Binh Tan and Binh Chanh must report their task of controlling discharges.
Moreover, they must liaise with managers of industrial and export processing zone to check operation and maintenance of wastewater collection and treatment system in these zones.
