Ho Chi Minh City plans markets for street vendors

Deputy Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City Tran Vinh Tuyen yesterday proposed district to arrange a  weekend market in Bach Dang Park along a Saigon River bank.

As per the proposal, the fair will have 120 booths with four sections including for musical performance, a section to introduce Vietnamese products, a food area and a section for playing folk games. Enterprises sell food must pledge to sell food with clear origin for food safety. The weekend market will open 10 am to 10pm in Saturdays and Sundays.

Mr. Thuan said the market will operate in the second quarter when the People’s Committee gave the green light. Supporting the weekend market proposal, deputy director of the Department of Transport Tran Quang Lam fretted traffic congestion in rush hour in the market.

Also at the meeting, District 1 proposed to organize pilot food areas in some streets to underprivileged street vendors seek an alternative way of making a living. District 1 slated to open the street food zones on the sidewalks of Nguyen Van Chiem Street for 20 street vendors who will sell food from 6am to 1pm, Chu Manh Trinh Street for 35 street vendors, and Bach Tung Diep Park at the intersection of Ly Tu Trong with Pasteur Streets for 15 street vendor from 6am to 9 am. All street vendors need not to pay fee when selling in these above places.
