The Japanese consulate in Ho Chi Minh City has provided US$96,478 to improve medical treatment at a hospital in the Mekong delta province of Bac Lieu.

A grant contract signing ceremony took place December 11 at Japan’s Consulate General in HCM City for the “Project for Procuring Medical Equipment for Vinh Loi District Medical Hospital in Bac Lieu Province.”

The Government of Japan funded the project through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Projects (GGP).

Mr. Nguyen Minh Tung, deputy director of the Health Department of Bac Lieu Province received grant from the consul-general, Mr. Ikuo Mizuki.

The money will be used to purchase 12 types of essential medical equipment for the Vinh Loi District Medical Hospital in order to provide prompt and accurate diagnoses and treatment to 150,000 local residents.

The hospital is severely lacking in equipment and is forced to transfer many patients to larger hospitals. However, transport is difficult as the remote hospital is surrounded by several waterways.

At the signing ceremony, Consul-General Mizuki said he hoped that through the project, Vinh Loi residents would receive better medical treatment and that Japan and Bac Lieu Province would develop closer ties.

The event was attended by Nguyen Chinh Quan, chairman of Vinh Loi People’s Committee and Nguyen Ngoc Minh, director of General Hospital.
