New rates ignored by several parking lots in HCMC

Several parking lots continue to disregard regulations laid by the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, prohibiting charging of exorbitant parking rates, while some administrative organs are still collecting parking fees despite having no permission to do so.

The City People’s Committee had applied new parking rates that were to take effect from August 1, which were also increased 2-5 times more than the older rates.

On August 6, a Saigon Giai Phong reporter parked his motorcycle at a parking lot along the pavement of Nguyen Du Street in Ben Nghe Ward of District 1 for about ten minutes and was charged VND5,000.

The reporter asked why the rate was VND5,000, as new regulations specified only VND3,000, to which the parking lot owner replied that their charge was VND5,000, and if anyone could not pay this amount then they would not be allowed to park there.

Such a situation also occurred in other parking lots including one at the corner of Le Van Huu and Le Duan Streets.

Ben Nghe Ward authorities in District 1 said that they will send officials to examine these lots.

Parking lots in hotels, restaurants and buildings in the City center still maintain exorbitant rates, the same as before, with no change since the regulations were passed.

The parking lot at Kumho Asiana Plaza on Le Duan Street in Ben Nghe Ward of District 1 is another place charging high rates, far beyond regulatory rates.

The new regulations also exempt people coming to administrative offices for business from paying parking fees.

On August 6, SGGP reporters arrived at the headquarters building of the HCMC Department of Transport and a watchman demanded they pay VND2,000 for parking of motorcycle.

Similarly, a watchman at the People’s Committee office in Ward 22 of Binh Thanh District asked a reporter to pay VND3,000.

Parking lots at other departments and people’s committee offices in some districts are also defying regulations set to collect parking fees from August 1.
