On the occasion of Tet Lunar New Year, the Phu Nhuan Jewelry Company (PNJ) presented 400 gifts, each worth VND 600,000 (US$ 30) to disadvantaged families, the Blind Association and the Phu Nhuan special school “Belief”.
Earlier, company representatives visited and offered 450 gifts each worth VND 400,000 (US$ 20) to poor households in the two districts of Can Gio and Cu Chi in
PNJ also provided a sum of VND 50 million to Sai Gon Giai Phong sponsored program “ Mua Xuan Bien gioi” ( Spring in the Frontier ) and delivered gifts to needy people, including the poor, ethnic minorities in remote areas in the central highland province of Tay Nguyen.
Established in 2005, the PNJ Fund for the poor spent VND 25 billion to carry out the "Tet Holiday for the Poor" program which is an annual event aimed to help the poor have a joyous and happy Tet.
The fund also helps ease the difficulties and hardships of victims in disaster areas throughout
The city's Farmers Association also gave 1,000 clean water storage tanks, gifts and health insurance cards for disabled children of farmers. The total value of the assistance provided is estimated at VND5 billion.
Other cities and provinces also plan to donate gifts to the needy.
This is the third year that authorities in the central city have doled out Tet largesse.
Four years ago, city Party Committee secretary Nguyen Ba Thanh witnessed a sight which persuaded him to help the poor celebrate Tet — a group of cyclo and motorbike-taxi drivers wrangling over customers before the New Year.
