Saigontourist, which has been entrusted with organizing the Tet celebrations in Ho Chi Minh City, has said giant glutinous rice cakes will not be made this year for the Banh Tet festival a few days ahead of the Lunar New Year.

Unlike previous years, a banh tet-making competition would be held during the festival, January 21, it said.

The cakes, made with green bean paste and pork fat filling, would be donated to poor people in the city, the company said at a press conference Wednesday.

Deputy general director of Saigontourist, Tran Hung Viet, said it has been decided that the Year of the Buffalo would be welcomed in a manner appropriate for the current economic situation.

The highlight of the Tet celebrations will be the Nguyen Hue Flower Road where scenes of Vietnamese villages will be recreated from January 23 to 28.

The company also said fireworks would be set off at six places in the city.

Tet falls on January 26 next year.
